Webhosting Companies – What Is The Bottom Line?

What To Look For in a Web Hosting Company

One of the first challenges when looking for a web hosting company to host your website is the mind boggling array of hosting companies, all of whom seem to offer the same things. But this is one of those situations where we need to drill down a little deeper and do some comparisons in order to reveal the true situation. The big difference that I found in my research is not only in how their services and features are designed, but maybe more importantly, how they are delivered. If you look closely enough at how a company presents themselves and whether their products are designed with the consumer in mind, you will see subtle indicators of their business mindset.

Addressing Different Needs

A company has to be professional enough to realize that one size does not fit all in every situation. One consumer might focus on uptime as their highest priority characteristic, while others might be more focused on bandwidth, or e-mail accounts, or redirects, or connection speeds, or number of domains under one account. Other features and services may include auto responders, scripts for blogging and other capabilities, dedicated servers vs shared servers, can you pay by the month or do they require a year or two? How about support? These are just a few of the services and features to be considered, but many of the hosting companies offer these same services and features, so what is the difference? For me it was and is the business mindset and flexibility. Different people have different reasons for publishing a website and a hosting company should be responsive to this reality. A motion picture production company might want to put up a site to promote their latest film for one or two months prior to release and don’t want to have to pay for an entire year. An internet marketer might need to put up a one page site as a landing page for a hot product and of course, they don’t know how long it will remain a hot item so they need some flexibility. You may think that webhosting companies are all the same because they certainly look that way on the surface, but would you like working with people with ho hum attitudes? I would like to know that the people I’m working with are on the ball.

The Business Philosophy

A good business model is the result of a good business philosophy. If they don’t start with that, then they are just wannabes winging it and pretending to be professionals. Don’t be afraid to call these companies and talk with them. Ask them questions, and when you do, look for how they answer as well as the answer itself. You’re looking for a mindset here. Do they care about the client? Are they enthusiastic? Do you pick up a sense of collaborative spirit, are they interested in your needs and concerns? Do they have a helpful attitude? Even after you do your homework and have made a choice, you might want to hedge your bet by paying more money for a shorter contract. Then, if they don’t perform to your requirements, you can always move your website to another hosting company.

Good luck out there.
