It’s safe to say most people wonder what a dedicated server actually is. In all honesty, a dedicated server isn’t that complicated a product. A server is just like a computer<\/p>\n

The difference between your home computer and a dedicated server is that your computer (or laptop) will be hosted in a case, that’s suitable to sit on a desk or dining room table (which is where I’m writing from on my Macbook at present!). Datacentres host dedicated servers<\/p>\n

The normal managed server<\/a> will be in a 1U case. A pizza box would be about the same height! Although, you won’t find pizza in a server case. Take for example Dell’s popular R200 server. 26 servers can be fitted into a 16 amp rack on averaged, based on a power draw of 0.6 – 0.4 amps. These servers are fitted to rackmount rails, that fit into the rack, one on top of the other. At the back of each dedicated server, you’ll find a network and power port. Each rack will have power supply units and at least one switch for the server to connect to. There will be aisels of racks in a datacentre. Some racks host specialist network equipment, switches and routers connected to the internet backbone. For this kind of environment, a company such as Melbourne who specialise in dedicated servers<\/a> would be ideal. <\/p>\n

Dedicated servers require a fast internet connection<\/p>\n

The majority of home connections run at around 10mbs. This isn’t enough for a dedicated server. A 100mbit connection is expected for dedicated servers. Services such as streaming require this speed.
