The Issue Of Green Electricity As Opposed To Green Data Centres.
If you are a potential client for dedicated servers, colocation, cloud hosting etc. is there any real choice or are you just being sold the equivalent of decaffeinated coffee?
The Law, Green servers and profitability.
One of the new problems facing our industry is the pressure to be more eco and to provide green dedicated Servers. In actuality at the moment Green costs more and if something costs more shareholders and company directors don’t like it. In with a USA up until recently a organization could actually get in trouble with shareholders are doing something that could be seen as adversely affecting the bottom line.
That does seem a bit harsh, and I’m glad that they now have changed it to enable company directors and CEOs to make more green decisions that may affect profit margins and entertaining the idea of green dedicated Servers.
However I think we’re looking at the wrong question here, what we should be looking for is the solution where being eco-friendlydoesn’t cost more.
Is the internet green? is a Yellow Pages wasteful?
People talk about how Yellow pages are not ecological and it seems “obviously” much more green to search on the Internet.
Actually is this factually correct?
The main search engines all have racks running 24-7 in hot places like Palo Alto and California where the need for air conditioning is much higher . This uses a massive amount of electricity… a telephone directory does not need any electricity.
Currently, there is a lot of directory in bashing going on… (mainly buy new directory replacement websites I might add) but think about it, once directories are made that they last a year and reside on the sideboard next to the telephone.
All of us in the industry are keeping very quiet about how un-green your average search on Google is… (the same way Costa coffee is keeping very quiet about the bad effects of caffeine- but at least you have the choice of decaffeinated…)
Of course you cannot turn back time the idea that the phone directory will still be around in five or 10 years is a complete fallacy.
Decaffeinated servers
It is really an issue of push and shove… like many things… it looks like its down to straight expense, but sometimes it boils down to the bizarre lack of choice. The public and corporations are keeping so much more stuff in the cloud these days …. and companies like us who furnish them with the dedicated server space that they need are really pushed around in the middle.
People do want greener servers… the issue is not that Eco friendly servers are unavailable….
to be fair as an company you can make the choice to invest in them…but really it is an issue for the utility companies and central government.
Green electricty
The issue really is…. why is there such a lack of choice of green power? And then when it is available why, if central government says it wants to be green…
why is it so much more expensive?
