The Dot Tel Domain is a relatively new internet Top Level Domain (TLD) that operates from the internet’s Domain Name System (DNS). These domains have been available to the public for under a year. Since its inception around 275 thousand domains have been registered by investors, speculators, businesses, and individuals.
A Dot Tel Directory is a web site with contact information and text. A product directory has product listings. It usually has a geographical component because having a product directory for the whole world is unrealistic unless it is a very rare product. For example, with a common product like glass or aluminum, there will usually be a limited geographical area for that directory. It is, however, possible to create very large directories and this is discussed below.
A good example of a mixed product and geographical directory could be ‘West Texas Aluminum’. The geographical area is understood to be ‘West Texas’ and it could be a directory of aluminum products companies. The benefit of a domain with this name is that it is good for search because the keywords are in the domain name.
Another kind of directory is a purely geographical directory. Examples would be towns, cities, provinces, or states. A geographical directory may be targeted to visitors or tourists in that town or city. It may be only for tourist attractions or other 1 and 1 hosting
activities in the town or city. Using the previous example such a directory could be of a small city in ‘West Texas’.
The last type of directory is the services directory where only certain kinds of services in a particular geographical area are listed. For example, a directory could be of accountants in a particular city. It is conceivable that a global service 1 web hosting directory without a geographical area could be created. But the service activity would need to be very specialised. A good example of a hybrid service directory could be a city in ‘West Texas’ Accounting Services.
Dot Tel Directories are theoretically limited in size because each Dot Tel can have only 3,000 contact records. This limitation can be overcome, however, because Dot Tels can be added together to form a big domain. For example, in a directory created for a city’s landlines of 30,000 numbers, 10 best hosting directories could be used. The master directory’s home page would just be ten links to the other Dot Tel directories. The ten subsidiary directories could then be structured by area, alphabetical surname, or a combination of the two together.
Dot Tel Domain directories may also be broad and/or deep. This means that the folder structure (the sub-domain structure) can be wide with lots of entries on a single page. Or it may be deep which means the sub-domains have many levels. The directory owner must decide on a balance between the breadth and the depth to give the user the best experience possible.
The user must be kept foremost in the mind of the Dot Tel Directory developer. The developer needs to know how far users are able to scroll down in order to find information and how many sub-domains levels they will click on before they become frustrated. Ideally, the developer should talk to many potential users to get their opinions about these issues before building their directory.
