One reason, people use Hostgator for hosting is because they want to use cPanel and not GoDaddy’s Plesk, which for some is a bit of a hassle. Actually, I don’t mind Plesk, it just takes a bit of getting used to. Hostgator does have world winning support so there is another reason to use Hostgator over GoDaddy for web hosting.
GoDaddy does only offer Windows web hosting so that is another reason why people will tend to buy their web domain with GoDaddy and then host their domain with Hostgator. Hostgator does allow you to use Linux based servers. I do prefer Linux because it seems a bit more secure and I would rather go with Linux, rather then setting myself up for a hassle, later on down the road. Whichever one you choose to use you should be happy with them both.
