Webhosting – ThinkHost Webhosting Review
Think Host has been around since 1999 and is another host that falls into the “green” category. They make a concerted effort to minimize the environmental impact of their organization while offering affordable webhosting services to their clients.
In many ways, ThinkHost has virtually the same blurb as many other green hosting companies. They admit, up front, that they get their power from the same grid as the rest of us, which has whatever environmental impact as it always does. The difference is that they pay, kilowatt per kilowatt of their intake, to have green energy providers put the same amount of power that hey draw back into the grid. In this way they make sure that they neutralize whatever load they put on the system.
They also seem to concern themselves with other green details like energy efficient light bulbs and promoting telecommuting. I can’t prove that they really do use low-energy light-bulbs, but they at least make an effort to look like they are not simply deferring the problem. They submit themselves to the standards of independent auditing and certification groups. Also, like many other “green” businesses, the report various facts about the power consumption of servers to help their clients contextualize the impact they would be having by not going green. What really speaks well of this company is that, unlike many others, when they state a fact they actually cite a source for that fact. Call me an academic nerd, but facts that you can verify and question demonstrate a real sign of good faith that I can get behind. They’ll also plant a tree on your behalf, which is always nice.
The piece of mind they offer also comes at a reasonable price, even if it isn’t the lowest one out there. Their hosting package cost $7.95 a month and comes with unlimited server space, bandwidth, MySQL databases, domain hosting capabilities, FTP access, POP3/IMAP e-mail accounts and a webmail system. You can also make use of various scripting technologies like PHP and Perl. Support for SSL certificates is also available.
They also have plenty of other features, but what is important for our purposes is that they offer a comprehensive package. There are some points against this company that are worth noting. For starters, you can’t easily call their tech support system. Your servers are monitored around the clock, but the support system is based on an online ticket system.
The company makes great claims about uptime guarantees and offers a 14-day money-back trial period, but some customers report problems nonetheless. While there are plenty of satisfied customers out there, some people report downtime and several severe stability issues. Worse, some customers report that when they tried to avail themselves of the 14-day money-back option (which is a fairly short window), they were unable to do so as they could not receive service in time. Overall, the company scores well in terms of pricing, above average in terms of reliability, but fairly poorly on the support front. Nonetheless, Think Host is will be a viable option for the green-conscious IT crowd.
